Morriston 26 Porthcawl 30

Porthcawl picked up maximum points on tricky away this trip to Morriston, home club of the famous Moriarty Rugby Family, with 4 tries in an exciting if somewhat error-ridden encounter .

The Seaweeds got off to a great start when after just 4 minutes, some good attacking play, opened up the opportunity for full-back Ben Thomas to slither through for a corner try, superbly converted by fly-half Josh White and nil-7.
Morriston got back into the match 5 minutes later when a Porthcawl offside allowed a 22 metre penalty for 3-7.

Porthcawl lost prop Tim Lunn with a head injury before Ben Thomas produced a mazy run that had the home side chasing shadows, until this came to an end with a high tackle. White punished that error with another penalty for 3-10. Lunn then returned both to the field and to wrecking the home scrum with some powerful scrummaging. This led to the perfect platform for White to extend the lead with a super 40 metre drop goal at 3-13.

Despite their good play this far, Porthcawl yielded a penalty for back-chat to the referee and as the penalty attempt hit the post and bounced back into play, Morriston nabbed an opportunist converted try and were suddenly only 3 adrift at 10-13.
With centre Aled Davies having a great match in midfield, the Seaweeds extended their lead just short of going into the break, as Davies’ break and scoring pass from Jordan Fox as the extra man, saw young left wing Ross Jenkins fly over at the corner, with White’s conversion coming back off the post. Morriston immediately responded with another penalty for 16-18 at half-time and Porthcawl needing to make better use of their possession in the second half.

It was the home side that took the lead for the first time with another penalty after 43 minutes and 19-18 before a driving Seaweeds lineout set up the chance for the mercurial Ben Thomas to nab his brace try, as he weaved his way through the gap to score another Porthcawl try, converted by White for 19-25, a lead Porthcawl would not lose.

As the visiting backline got its’ act together once more, it was centre Davies who strode for the corner for an outstanding bonus point try, White’s attempt at the extras just short and wide and at 19-30 with just 5 minutes left, Porthcawl had to simply keep their shape and defence intact.

However the home side were not done yet and when the cruellest of bounces from a speculative kick ahead beat Ben Thomas, Morriston gleefully snatched a converted try at the posts for 26-30, a score too close for comfort at the end, nevertheless a valuable 5 points for the Seaweeds.

Porthcawl will be seeking the double and maximum points once more when Ystradgynlais visit South Road on Saturday.
